Enduring Decorating Tips

When buying one of the new homes in Grand Forks ND, you may also be selling a home. It’s easy to get caught up in making your current home neutral enough to appeal to a variety of buyers, and continue that neutrality into your new home. Neutrals have their place, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add in colors, patterns, textures, and more. With helpful tips and advice that have stood the test of time, you can create a space that truly feels like your home.

First, find your style. Looking through design websites and sites like Houzz and Pinterest can help you see what you gravitate toward most often. It doesn’t have to be a specific design style as much as a feel for the colors, shapes, and patterns that appeal to you most. You can then pick and choose to create your own vision with more focus.

Don’t leave your walls bare, but don’t buy artwork that doesn’t move you in some way. Definitely don’t buy a piece just because it matches the sofa! The artwork in your home can be anything from original works to family photos or even your children’s artwork. How you group and hang the works you choose can vary, but keep in mind that generally you want to hang pieces so that the central point is around eye level, or around 5 feet from the floor. For art around seated areas, you can lower it a little more for easier viewing.

When it comes to choosing paint colors, try to get a sample pot so you can test the paint colors on every wall where you plan to paint. The shift in lighting even from natural light within one room can create significant changes in the look of the paint, from one wall to another. Look at the colors throughout the day as well to see how they look in natural light and artificial light.

Finally, invest in a good tape measurer and use it to measure everything! Otherwise you may end up with a dining table or sofa that is too big or too small for the intended space. Keep a list of each room’s measurements so you can make sure everything will fit properly. In addition, make sure you know the measurements of your table and chairs, particularly if you’re mixing and matching. Dining chairs with arms may not fit under the table or the chairs may be too wide for the table if you’re pairing them. The seat of others may be too low for comfortable dining. Measure twice so you only have to buy once.
